Nicolau Von Rupp wins the Perfect Chapter powered by Billabong

CASCAIS (February 16th, 2014) – Nicolau Von Rupp has won the 3rd annual Perfect Chapter powered by Billabong, in 9+ feet waves at Carcavelos Beach, Portugal. The defending champ took the win for the second year in a row, defeating Ruben Gonzalez (2nd), Marlon Lipke (3rd) and António Silva (4th) in the final.

Nicolau was indeed the man of the day. A part from a 5000€ prize money, he was also rewarded with a 1500€ check by MOCHE for performing the best wave of the event as soon as he got into his first heat, nailing the single perfect 10 of the competition.

“Thank you all for coming. You’ve strengthened our souls to face the sea today”, the champ said. “It was a tough day at Carcavelos Beach. The conditions were classic but also hard to deal with. Mother Nature decided to beat us up”, he added, referring to the size and power of the waves.

The conditions were as perfect as demanding at the event site, with some sets going over 10 feet high and strong surf making it hard for the athletes to reach the line-up. We saw a lot of broken surfboards and gnarly wipe outs throughout the day, requiring maximum commitment from the surfers to find the way out of Carcavelos’ powerful tubes.

The 2012 Europe’s surfing champ, Marlon Lipke, made an impressive back-to-back performance making it into the final after literally having crossed the world. Lipke was in Australia attending ASP WQS events when he was aware Perfect Chapter was on for Saturday. He immediately took a flight home landing in Lisbon around 11 am, only one hour before his first heat. “I’ve been inside airplanes for the last 30 hours and I’m happy I made it to the beach in time for my first heat. I’m pleased to see it was all worth it”, Lipke said.

Also, António Silva, the man who holds the record for the biggest wave ever ridden by a Portuguese surfer, proved his momentum as he reached the final despite having injured his knee after wiping out in one of his first heats.

Last but not least, hats off for the young surfers Filipe Jervis and Tomás Fernandes for seizing the special prizes for Best Score (a 500€ check from Kia) and Worst Wipe Out (a Nixon The 51-30 Tide watch), respectively.

Perfect Chapter is a special event that requires perfect, hollow haves, featuring a several weeks waiting period over which surfing forecast is closely monitored to make sure the competition takes place in the best possible surfing conditions. Also, surfers
