Capitulo Perfeito Brings the First Ever Surf Event to Desert Point

Waiting period opens today at the Lombok reef with 8 surfers on stand-by

IndonesiaSeptember 1, 2026  The waiting period for the Indonesian edition of Capitulo Perfeito opens today at Desert Point, Lombok, and runs until September 15. Eight surfers will take part in a one-day, tube-only format for a direct wildcard into the 2027 Capitulo Perfeito at Carcavelos.

The announcement comes with a video on what will be the first surf event ever held at Desert Point, one of the world’s most iconic waves and a defining destination for high-performance surfing.

“Taking Capitulo Perfeito to Desert Point is the start of the event’s 2.0 phase, which we announced in January when we added Mozambique and Indonesia to our calendar. In Mozambique the swell never showed up but this time we are confident we will get the waves we need. Desert Point fully represents what we have always been after: broadening the range of barrels we can offer the surfers and the people who follow us. Having the world’s top tube riders on a wave that iconic is going to test everyone, especially because no event has ever been held there. Put all of that together and we believe this will be one for the history books,” said Rui Costafounder of Capitulo Perfeito.

It is incredibly important for Cascais, and a great pride for us, to have events that are deeply connected to our identity and that go on to gain international recognition. Capitulo Perfeito established itself in Carcavelos and today carries the name of Cascais around the world. This connection with Desert Point allows us to further showcase the excellence of Carcavelos’ waves and establish Cascais as a global reference in surfing. We will be extremely proud to welcome the winner of the Desert Point event in 2027. It is the perfect bridge between two of the world’s finest barrel waves”, stated Bernardo Corrêa de BarrosPresident of Tourism of Cascais.

“Surfing in an event at Desert Point is a dream come true. If the waves are pumping, it will definitely be a nerve-racking feeling because you don’t want to mess up this opportunity. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing, no doubt! It’s going to be an amazing day sharing this experience with some of my good friends and also the local rippers in Indonesia. There definitely won’t be any losers on the day it runs. We are all just lucky to be there,” said Cam Richards, reigning champ of Capitulo Perfeito.

This event is only going to happen with the support of the Desert Point community, specially all the surfersby letting us surf this waveI want to say a big thank you to the localsto PSOI (Surfing Indonesia), and also to Capitulo Perfeito for choosing Desert Point. I hope this event can bring a positive impact to the local community”, stated Tipi Jabrik, event diretor in Indonesia.

The Wave

Desert Point is one of the most demanding waves on the planet — a long, shallow left over a reef shelf that comes to life only on a narrow combination of swell direction, wind and tide. It is a wave that rewards patience, which is the condition Capitulo Perfeito has run on since 2012: the event goes ahead only when the ocean delivers world-class barrels, and only tubes are scored. True to the format, the organisation will monitor forecasts throughout the waiting period and issue the official call with 72 hours’ notice, running the event at the Lombok reef only when conditions justify it.

Event Format & Line-Up

The eight-surfer draw is led by three of the four finalists from the 2025 Carcavelos edition — Balaram Stack, Cam Richards and Pedro Calado. The fourth finalist, Noah Beschen, will not travel to Indonesia, as previously announced, due to professional commitments. His place goes to Nic von Rupp, 5th in Carcavelos (immediately behind Beschen), who edged out Miguel Blanco on overall score after the two finished tied on placing. They are joined by local wildcards Sulaiman and Usman Trioko, and two global wildcards still to be announced

The event will open with a Local Heat featuring eight surfers from Lombok: Awan, Hendra, Rusdi, Fajrul, Ilham, Budi, Darmawan and Ziggy. The main event will then run over three stages. Round 1 and Round 2 are both non-elimination: the eight invitees are drawn into two heats of four, and every surfer takes part in both rounds regardless of their result in the first. The four highest-scoring surfers advance directly to the Final. All heats run for 45 minutes.

From here, it is down to the ocean. The forecast is under watch, the surfers are on stand-by, and the call comes 72 hours in advance. Desert Point has never hosted a surf event. That changes this month.
