Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong Remains Carbon Neutral in 2025

Organizers set to reverse the event’s environmental impact by funding a green project in Brazil

CASCAIS (January 26, 2024) – Capitulo Perfeito powered by Billabong, the one-day invite-only tube riding contest taking place at Carcavelos Beach, Portugal, within a waiting period running until March 11, will remain carbon neutral in 2025 by teaming up with Reflora Initiative, an environmental startup committed to calculating, reducing, and offsetting the carbon footprint of its partners.

For the second consecutive year, Capitulo Perfeito will be co-funding the Envira Project – a green project focused on preventing the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon Forest and improving the quality of life of local communities – as a way of counterweighing the amount of CO2 emissions resulting from the event.

With this compensatory investment, contest directors will see their footprint reduced to zero by endorsing the protection of more than 39,000 hectares of forest, the preservation of nearly 80 species of plants and animals risking extinction, the expansion of local health facilities, and the development of new sources of income for the local community.

Through this long-time partnership with Reflora, Capitulo Perfeito powered by Billabong remains the first and only Portuguese-based surf contest to reach carbon neutrality, further attesting to the event’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Contest director Rui Costa acknowledges the significant carbon footprint caused by bringing top tube riders from around the world to Portugal. “As an event held in the ocean, sustainability is at the core of Capitulo Perfeito’s identity,” he explains. “It’s crucial that we counteract our carbon emissions and implement measures to protect the planet and the oceans. In 2025, we remain committed to environmental responsibility, reinforcing our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and minimize our impact both locally and globally,” he concludes.

Furthermore, the event’s sponsors are being encouraged to mitigate the consumption of plastic-based promo materials and to uphold economic circularity by donating expendable advertising resources to a local association specialized in recycling and reusing plastic waste. Each sponsor is also planting a tree in the Sponsors Green Point, in a symbolic gesture meant to raise awareness about protecting the environment, with all planted trees being donated to a local school after the event is finished. Also at the Sponsors Green Point, there will be a collection point powered by Billabong for used neoprene wetsuits, which will be recycled and reintegrated into the production chain.
